Golf Meet Hosted at Onaga

By Kaylee Joseph

On Monday, April 28, the Valley Heights golf members attended a golf meet hosted by Onaga at the city course. Seven teams participated in this meet and the top ten individuals medaled. Out of the seven schools that attended, Valley Heights placed third.

Senior Kirk Duensing stated, "I didn’t do as well this meet as I hoped I would but were getting ready for league and regionals, and I hope that our four-man team can lead us to a victory at regionals."

Junior Justin Arpin led the four-man team with the best score of 99. Duensing trailed a stroke behind Justin with a score of 100. Junior Bryce Hedke and senior Zac Bauman scored 102 and 104 respectively. Also playing for VH were sophomores Tim Laughlin with a score of 115 and Donovan Bradley with a score of 117.

"I thought this was one of my best meets. I was able to get the lowest score which helped our team to third place," stated Arpin.

Washington won this meet with a score of 365 with Frankfort right behind them with a score of 373. Valley Heights’ accumulated their individual scores to put the team in third place with a score of 405. Other teams that participated in this meet were Onaga, Centralia, Linn and Riley County.

Coach Ryan Noel spoke of this meet and his future goals for the golf team, "We didn't score as well as we are capable of. As a group, the guys know they left some strokes out there. We are still looking for more consistency and want to be around 385 as a four-man total in the near future."

The VH golf members will be attending and hosting the TVL meet on Friday, May 9 and will be attending regionals on Monday, May 12 at Herington. Coach Noel spoke of his goals for regionals, "Washington has emerged as the favorite the last couple weeks in league play. We'll have to be lower than 380 to win the league. Regionals will be tough. Herington is a course you can score well on but smart play will be important."
