MULTI-TIERED SYSTEMS OF SUPPORT (MTSS)

WHAT IS MTSS?

MTSS is a multi-step process of providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all students. Individual student’s progress is monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. MTSS is used in addressing reading, math and behavior.

MTSS allows our teachers to quickly identify student needs and the best way to address those needs. The idea is to get each and every student the support and assistance they need to be successful.

Administrators, teachers and MTSS coaches at Valley Heights have undergone (and continue to receive) intensive training. State MTSS coaches assist us in making sure we are using best practices to make sure all students are getting what they need to be successful.

WHY MTSS?

It will make all students more successful in school and on track for graduation, while preparing them to be college or career ready. MTSS has been implemented and proven effective in districts across the country. MTSS is also part of the new school accreditation model known as KESA.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

MTSS has three levels, or tiers, of instruction and support, all aimed at a streamlined way to provide the best instruction to all students.

  • Tier I includes the instruction and support provided to all children.
  • Tier II serves students needing more help. Extra instruction and support often are provided to these children in small groups.
  • Tier III is for children who need intense support in order to succeed. Extra instruction and support are provided, often in even smaller groups or one-on-one.
