BLOCK OUT HUNGER.

“This year the students who participated in the Block Out Hunger Day brought 819 food items,” said Barbara Buck, Stuco sponsor. “I have been the sponsor for Stuco for about 16 or 17 years.” Mrs. Buck believes that the Block Out Hunger Day is a great opportunityto give back to the community and also that the students learn more about serving their community. “I think that the Block Out Hunger Day gives students a chance to also have fun. We could just say to bring food for the food pantry, but we think there is more competition and fun if we have students block the classroom doors.”

This is the 5th year of Stuco organizing the Block Out Hunger Day. The food items brought are donated to the Methodist Church in Blue Rapids, which is where the food pantry is located. After that, the Methodist Church distributes the food monthly to people in the community who need it. Senior and Stuco President, Hannah Musil, describes her third year in Stuco. “I enjoy the Block Out Hunger Day because it gives the students a fun incentive and also helps the community. After the doors are blocked, the students have many options to choose from for the afternoon. The choices vary from cooking to movies to gym time.”

This year is Senior, Robin Robertson’s first year in Stuco. She is a member of Stuco because of her position as FCCLA president, and she represents that organization in Stuco. Robin said, “I like having Block Out Hunger Day because the students have fun blocking the classroom doors and us Stuco members enjoy serving our community.”
