Kayla Bigham preparing for speech.

UP FRONT. Every year at Valley Heights it is required for each sophomore to take speech class in order to graduate. There are 2 semester speech classes, fall and spring. Lynette Steele-Coon teaches the speech class to the students. “I love teaching speech, it teaches students life skills that they will use in the future,” says Coon.

During the first semester at Valley Heights, sophomore Jayden DeWalt was in the fall 2022-2023 speech class. Jayden was assigned 3 speeches during his course. “I really enjoyed speech class, it taught me how to be more comfortable with speaking in front of others, and not be so nervous,” says Jayden. He even says he thinks it will help him in his future. In total the first semester class did three speeches; Tarzan and Jane Speech, Trivial Pursuit Speech, and Career Speech. Out of all three Jayden says his favorite was the Tarzan and Jane speech.

Braylee Frizson, sophomore, is currently in the second semester speech class. “I was super nervous at first to be in speech, but once I got the hang of it, it started to get easier,” says Braylee. Braylee’s favorite part of speech class is being able to hear everyone else’s speeches and their topics. She said it really helped her to get to know her classmates and what they like. “The hardest part of speech class is having to memorize my transitions in my speech,” says Braylee. Braylee believes that speech will help her in the future if she ever has to speak in front of a large group of people.

Speech class is very beneficial to the Valley Heights students. Being a successful class for many years, and many years to come.
