BOOK BAG MUST-HAVES. According to Fortune Business Insights, the backpack market has a global worth of 15.9 billion dollars in 2022. Although Valley Heights only represents a very small fraction of that statistic, it is easy to see how that number is so high considering the number of students and backpacks there are. Many students across the globe carry the same common necessities in order to get through the school day.

Valley Heights students consider chapstick, hygienic supplies, gum, water, and snacks to be absolute must-haves to bring to school. Sophomore,Violet Slifer, says “I like to keep chapstick so I don’t pick at my lips. I also have to have gum or snacks so I'm not thinking about food the whole day.” As an athlete, Ava Smith adds that she carries deodorant, perfume, and water with her everywhere she goes to remain hydrated and smelling nice. "Carrying and using these must-haves leads to a happier and healthier school year," says the sophomore. Violet and Ava are pictured next to their art projects which feature their dedication to their bookbags through either a poem, bible verse, or a personalized saying.

At the start of the 19th century, the first backpack was created. Originally used for hiking, students now transport themselves between classes while carrying essentials like school supplies. But it wasn't always like this; for a long time at Valley Heights, students had to go to their locker to gather their belongings after every class. Students in grades 9-12 can now carry their backpacks to and from courses. Book bags have a significant impact on our academic performance and mental health. We couldn’t live without them.
