Play-by-Play by Carson Spoonts of Valley Heights Football versus the Smith Center Redmen

Mustangs came off a big win against Wabaunsee the week before going into week eight of the regular season. Valley Heights football went up against Smith Center in one of the biggest games in the state on October 20th. This game would decide who would become the District Five champions. 

The first quarter started off with the Mustangs winning the toss, the Mustangs chose to receive. At kickoff the Mustangs get a good return setting themselves up around the 40 yard line. On the first drive the Mustangs are forced to punt, landing the Redmen on their own 25 yard line. On the Redmen’s first offensive drive they scored after driving the ball down the field, making the score 6-0 after failing to convert the two points. The Mustangs gave up a fight holding them to multiple third and longs and a fourth down that the Redmen converted. The next kickoff, the Mustangs moved the ball to their 40 yard line. On Valley Heights' next drive, they drove the ball down the field to the Redmen’s 35 yard line at the end of the first quarter. 

Starting the 2nd quarter at the 35 yard line. After a penalty and the Redmen stopping the Mustangs dominant offense, they forced another punt. The punt went out of the end zone resulting in a touchback. The Mustangs forced a punt after a first down following the Redmen’s first play. The Redmen punted the ball to the Mustang 35 yard line. On the Mustangs first play of the drive, quarterback Carson Spoonts, audibles the play and throws the ball to Royce Ekstrum for 40 yards. The Mustangs score on the drive with a 21 yard run by Kaison Bigham, the score is 8-6 after converting the two points. The Mustangs kickoff and put the Redmen on their own 40 yard line. The Mustangs got a stop and forced a punt on the first set of downs. After the punt, the Mustangs got the ball on their 40 yard line. The Mustangs put a good drive together after pushing the ball to the five yard line. A throw by Spoonts to Cayden Dummermuth had the ball bounce off his chest and the Redmen intercepted the ball in the endzone. The Redmen ran the clock out on their drive with the score 8-6, Mustangs up at halftime. 

The Redmen got the ball after half with the Mustangs kicking off the ball. The Redmen got the ball to the 50 yard line before being stopped. On the first drive of the second half, the Redmen scored, 12-8 after the Redmen failed to convert the two points. The Redmen kicked off to the Mustangs and after a couple of mental mistakes by the Mustang returners, the Redmen scored on a fumble, not converting the two points and the score was 18-8. On the Mustangs next play, they drove the ball down the field and on the Redmen’s 30 yard line. The Mustangs attempted to get a first down with a Bigham run down the middle, but the Redmen punched the ball out and recovered. The Redmen started their drive on the 25 yard line and the Mustangs got a good defensive push and forced a punt. The Mustangs got a good position on the field after the punt, and started the drive on the 40 yard line. The Mustangs started their drive off by making a few mistakes and going for it on fourth down, Spoonts threw the ball to Logan Gray for a 35 yard touchdown, converting the two points making the score 18-16. After kickoff, the Redmen got the ball going into the fourth quarter. 

In the last quarter of the game the Redmen drove the ball down the field taking six minutes off the clock and scoring, making the score 26-16 after the two point conversion. On the Mustangs next drive they got a few first downs but were stopped early by the Redmen, turning the ball over on downs. The Redmen drove the ball down the field and scored with two minutes left, converting the two points; the score was 34-16. The Mustangs received the kickoff and got the ball at the 50 yard line. After a few plays, Spoonts connected with Jayden Dewalt in the endzone, failing to convert the two points, the score was 34-22. The Redmen received the kickoff and ran down the clock. The final score, 34-22, the Redmen defeated the Mustangs.

The Valley Heights Mustangs will play the Remington Mustangs October 26, at 7:00pm. Come show support by cheering the Mustangs on during this very important game.
