The Mustangs Celebrating with the Regional Championship

Play-by-Play by Tyrel Wagner of Valley Heights Football versus the Sedgwick Cardinals.

Riding high after a dominant win over the Remington Broncos 58-14, the Mustangs face off against the Sedgwick Cardinals at Valley Center High School. The Cardinals just came off of a big win over Sacred Heart 35-7.

The first quarter started in the Mustang’s favor. The opening drive spanned just five plays, capped off with a 56 yard scamper by Jayden DeWalt. The Cardinals started a drive of their own. Down inside the Mustangs five-yard line after a tackle for loss by Senior, Tyrel Wagner, the Cardinals were stopped just short of the goal line by Carson Spoonts and Kaison Bigham. The Mustang’s next drive was started by an 81 yard rush by Carson Spoonts on a quarterback sneak. Just two plays later, Bigham rumbled his way into the endzone to make the score 14-0. The Cardinals began their second drive of the game. Completion after completion led to Sedgwick being down to the Valley Heights one yard line. The tailback scored from one yard out but the Mustangs stopped the two point attempt to keep the score 14-6.

The second quarter began with a fourth down stop by the Cardinals. The Mustangs answered back with their own defensive stop. Beginning from their own 46 yard line, the Mustangs put together another long nine play drive, ending with Cayden Dummermuth scoring a touchdown. Following the kickoff, the Cardinals put together another solid drive, yet the Mustang defense held strong forcing an incompletion on fourth down. The Mustangs then fired back with Jayden DeWalt turning on the jets for a score from 81 yards out. The Mustangs kept on the attack by stifling yet another Sedgwick drive. Bigham popped the ball loose and Wagner recovered the fumble. Going into halftime, the Mustangs were up 30-6.

After the break, the Cardinals came out strong and put up a scoring drive to cut the Mustang’s lead to two scores. The Mustangs did not quit, with a quick two play drive capped off by Kaison Bigham rumbling for 55 yards and a touchdown. The score now 38-12, the Cardinals were still firing back and scored once again to make it 38-20. The Mustangs would drive right back down the field and score yet another touchdown to increase the margin even more.The score moved to 46-20.

 The Cardinals responded  with three straight scoring drives to cut the deficit down to just six points. The Mustangs drove down the field one last time making the score 52-40. The Mustang’s defense would seal the game with Bigham dropping the quarterback on fourth down, giving the Mustangs the ball back. Once the clock hit zero, the Valley Heights Mustangs were Regional Champions. The Mustangs aren’t done yet, with their sectional matchup set for this Friday November 10, at 6 PM against the Medicine Lodge Indians.
