READ ALL ABOUT IT

READ ALL ABOUT IT. The clock is ticking, and the pressure is on as students at Valley Heights High School race against time to complete their Accelerated Reader tests before December 11th. With the due date right around the corner, the library is extremely busy. Sophomore, Violet Slifer, is a great example of a passionate reader. She shares, “I love reading! I don't get why people would put it aside for the last minute.” Violet’s enthusiasm for books helps her in many ways, not just in the classroom.

However, not everyone shares Violet’s love for reading. Gavin Crowder, for instance, admits, “I just forget about it cause I don’t really like reading, but I'll get’er done!” While Gavin may not be as enthusiastic about books, he recognizes the importance of completing the Accelerated Reader program and is determined to meet the deadline.

Students have a sense of pressure as the deadline draws near, which prompts them to use new tactics. Some students organize their reading carefully and assign a specific time each day so they can reach their specific reading goals. Others might read the whole book in one sitting in order to meet the deadline. The Accelerated Reader program is a driving force behind the development of reading habits.

All students have the same goal to successfully finish their AR books and complete the assignment, whether they are procrastinators or actually have a passion for reading. In addition to helping children become better readers, this challenges their time management skills, which will serve them in the future!
