RILEY COUNTY TOURNAMENT. This past weekend, our high school volleyball team went to the Riley County Tournament. In their pool, they played Riley County, Wichita Independent, and Chapman. During pool play the Lady Mustangs lost one match to Riley County (25-20, 15-25, 20-25), but rallied to beat Wichita Independent (25-7, 25-3) and Chapman (25-22, 25-11).
Later, during bracket play they lost to Clay Center (10-25, 25-17). This put them against Riley County for redemption and a potential third place finish. The Lady Mustangs played hard, and secured third place, beating Riley County 25-20, 25-17.
Susan Steinfort, Mustang Volleyball Head Coach says, “Our weaknesses were blocking and staying aggressive on good sets.” Steinfort agrees that when the team stays aggressive and places the ball smartly they have a lot of potential to continue improving. Assistant Coach Liz Miller, shared her favorite part from the tournament was, “an overset to Josie Parker who slammed it down and coming back to beat Riley County when it really mattered.” Miller was surprised by Junior Tessa Bigham, who stepped up and came out strong on the right side which helped the team win matches. Senior Mia Vermetten says, “This tournament exposed our weakness and highlighted what we need to work on. But it gave us more experience and confidence before going into the post season.”
