VETERANS DAY. On Friday November 7 the veterans in the community were invited to Valley Heights to be recognized by the student body. This annual event is hosted by KAYS who puts in a lot of behind the scenes effort. KAYS President Avery Stevenson says, “We try to incorporate the whole district into Veterans Day by having the elementary students do crafts for the veterans. Having the little kids show support is really important. We also ask the KAYS members to make muffins and come early to set everything up.”

During the high school's Veterans Day assembly, the veterans walk in to the music of their branch performed by Mrs. Oatney. The band and vocal shared musical selections and this year several students read poems. Jerry Zayas also gave a speech during the assembly about a veteran who was later a Valley Heights bus driver.

KAYS sponsor Mrs. Gallimore says, “Veterans Day is very important because it helps educate kids by spreading awareness. Sometimes when you don’t go through something you don’t fully understand it, so hearing their stories makes it more real.”

Veterans Day is more than just hearing the stories, it’s about honoring and respecting everything they have fought for.
