TURF TALK. Homecoming was Friday, September 11 and your Mustang Football team walked away with a 13-0 win over the Doniphan West Mustangs. When asked about how it felt playing in his final homecoming game, Rilo Shill said it “felt amazing, I went out, tried my best, and had a lot of fun.” While it is the last season for the seniors, they play alongside underclassmen. All of the seniors were able to agree that Daton Turner was the player that stepped up the most, Dino Conti shared “Dayton stepping onto the field as freshman quarterback was really not a position he should have needed to step up into that early, but after a week of practice he was able to pull his own weight to help us get the win.” There were multiple highlights of this homecoming game, Everson Parker said Aiden Unruh’s long touchdown play was the play that got him most excited because “it was a staple play of the game that got the momentum going.” Charlie Warders on the other hand shares he felt it was when Doniphan West was less than a few yards away from scoring, saying, “the goal line stand was my favorite because we showed them out.” While there are a lot of players on the field most of the seniors said that the person they believe showed the most leadership was Charlie Warders, with senior Aiden Unruh saying “he stepped up on defense, helped everyone get to where they needed to be and on offense he got the offensive line to do what they were supposed to do.”
Now we will get some perspective from the coaches. Coach Braden Cox said “I was proud of how our team stayed positive despite the adversity we've faced. They were eager and hungry for a win.” The Mustangs will continue to face difficult opponents all season long. Players will need to adjust and come together as a team. Coach Braden Cox continued saying “We have a lot to learn from the mistakes we made such as missing blocks and our offsides penalties. We also have to get better at tackling and capitalizing on bad passes from the opposing team.” Coach Tommy Tryon said “the team should be more confident in our defense, and know that we have some depth and experience if we face more injuries.”
