A Day in the Life of an Ag Student: AgShop Extravaganza “I’ve made some of my favorite memories with friends while in the ag shop and attending FFA events,” says junior Dakota Gillig. Dakota has grown up farming and  been a part of it for his whole life, so when he was given the opportunity in 8th grade, taking an ag class was a no brainer. Dakota and other ag students daily routines look a little different than some of their classmates; waking up with the sun to go check and feed livestock, going to school just to find as much extra time in the day possible to spend in the shop, and then going home after school to work with animals or working in the shop at home.

Students work on various projects including building trailers, feed bunks, and cattle chutes. Some students have worked with Mr. Obermeyer and Mrs. Smith to build sculptures that can count towards projects for both classes. When students are asked what their favorite thing about spending time in the ag shop most say, “Making memories with friends, no matter what the project may be.”

FFA is a huge part of many students' high school careers. FFA members attend different conferences and events throughout the year. Some of these include dairy judging, land judging, leadership school, national convention, and poultry judging. “I encourage kids to get involved in FFA. It's a good way to make friends and get a look into real world situations like job interviews. Attending different events like leadership school has helped me learn so much about leadership and how to be a better leader. I definitely encourage others to get into FFA because it’s never too late to get involved,” says Dakota.
