Group of VHHS Seniors at KU.

SO MANY OPTIONS. #MUSTANGTOUGH

“College is one of the most important decisions high schoolers have to make, and the impression colleges give off to students is key in their choice,” said a KU guide during a tour on January 24th to a group of four Valley Heights students. These students went on two college visits in one day. A visit to Kansas University (KU) in Lawrence and to Washburn campus in Topeka. The group of students consisted of three seniors: Aiden Nemechek, Claire Nolte, Sam Caswell, and Junior, Taylor Crook. The trip was coordinated and overseen by Kaci Smith, the VHHS Art Instructor.

“Deciding what college you want to go to can be such a hard choice, but going on trips like these really helps you find out where you’ll best belong,” said Smith during an interview. All students had interests in both colleges, especially in the Art programs and the Study Abroad programs. After walking over five miles and climbing many flights of stairs, each student had similar thoughts on how they felt about both schools.

“Kansas University has pumped out many brilliant artists and a lot of that is due to the important information they teach you,” said Smith after their visit. Although KU has more of a reputation for their Art program, the students said that Washburn’s program was pleasantly surprising too. Senior, Claire Nolte, said, “I loved how cozy the Art building at Washburn felt, it reminded me of our school here at Valley Heights.” Overall, the students thought both colleges were good choices to go to if you are interested in any kind of art.

“I would love to study abroad somewhere, and the college I go to really depends on that,” Senior, Sam Caswell said. Nearly 4.3 million students enroll in university-level education outside of their home country, and three more potential students to add to that number, attended these visits. The decision was unanimous among the group, KU is definitely the better choice between the two if you want to study abroad. They have a variety of trips all around the world from Asia to Europe with many interchangeable time lengths. “After the visit to KU, it moved up on my top five list mainly because of how good their Study Abroad program was,” said Taylor Crook.

Taking a step out of your comfort zone or making the long trip to these places may seem unnecessary, but many students and adults would disagree. “I plan on visiting many more colleges before making my decision and I recommend everyone else does, too.” said Claire Nolte.
