AN IMPORTANT MONTH IN HISTORY.

Theologian and human rights activist Desmond Tutu once said, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.” Valley Heights, as well as places all over the world, are celebrating the month of February as Black History Month.

Frederick Douglass lived from about 1817 to 1895. During his childhood, slavery was still a legal and operating institution. He and other escaped slaves such as Josiah Henson and Harriet Tubman were part of the movement called the abolitionist movement. They became outspoken abolitionists and constantly spoke out against slavery. Frederick Douglass once said, “Those who profess to favor freedom and yet depreciate agitation, are people who want crops without ploughing the ground.” His words inspired many future leaders and activists including Martin Luther King Jr.

Jordan Broxterman, high school history teacher, said, “Without black history, there is no history.” Many important individuals in history were judged in their time period because of the color of their skin. Today, people remember these people for their part in history, the content of their character, and the impact that they had on society. The most important thing is that today they are seen as important. Back then, people didn’t think the same.
